Utilizing Research-based Teaching Procedures to Improve the
Quality of Life for Persons with Developmental Disabilities
Research has demonstrated that the application of research-based teaching procedures leads to the development of functional communication skills, reduction in problem/inappropriate behavior and an increase in social interactions. Focusing on these core deficits has enormous implications regarding quality of life for persons with developmental disabilities and their caregivers
This workshop will demonstrate through extensive use of video how the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) that emphasize the teaching of verbal behavior can be applied effectively to teach functional communication skills, social skills, adaptive life skills, vocational skills, and other important skills to help persons with developmental disabilities enjoy life more fully.
Specifically, participants will be introduced to scientifically-based principles, procedures and instructional recommendations that enable instructors to:
Assess and select socially significant IEP goals and objectives
Establish rapport with their students
Develop and/or expand student interests (Conditioning reinforcers)
Promote peer interaction and social skills
Teach functional communication skills to vocal and non-vocal students
Utilize research-based teaching procedures to shape structured teaching, adaptive life skills and vocational training
