#2 Establishing Instructional Control by Building Rapport and Teaching Functional Communication
This two-day workshop is designed to prepare staff, related personnel, and parents to teach functional communication to students with autism and other developmental disabilities using based on B.F. Skinners behavioral classification of language. This hands-on experience focuses on developing the repertoires needed for teaching functional communication skills for both vocal and non-vocal students in the natural environment of public school settings.
Specifically, participants will be given information explaining how to:
Utilize a variety of strategies to identify a students reinforcers
Effectively pair staff, peers, environments, and items/activities with reinforcement
Capture and contrive motivation
Distinguish B.F. Skinners basic functions of language
Teach functional communication skills (requesting/manding)
Identify potential candidates for augmentative communication and select initial targets
Develop daily classroom schedules that incorporate numerous reinforcing activities (individual and group), thereby maximizing opportunities for functional communication
