Teacher preparation programs at the pre-service level teach about autism, but few college or university programs prepare teachers to teach children with autism. As a result, most teachers working in the field of special education today have had little or no training in research-based programs that have been proven to be effective for children with developmental disabilities. The Pre-service initiative was launched by FATE to address this critical need.
College or university students majoring in special education are now eligible to attend any of the workshops offered through FATE, without cost by applying for a grant through Project Pipeline.
The training offered through FATE is based upon the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA), the only scientifically-based treatment recognized by the U.S. Surgeon General. Training is also provided in Direct Instruction (DI), a research-based curriculum proven to be effective in teaching academic skills such as reading, language comprehension, and mathematics. FATE’s workshops were designed by special education teachers who are also board certified behavior analysts (BCBAs) for special education teachers to help them establish and effectively implement the principles of ABA throughout the day in their public school classrooms.
If you are a student majoring in special education, you may apply for a grant by completing the online application.
