#1 Applying the Principles of Applied Behavior Analysis in the Home

The principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) have provided the basis for many successful school programs for children with autism. These same principles may be utilized effectively in the home. This workshop will provide parents & caregivers with an overview of the science and how basic principles can be applied to teaching functional language, promoting social interest, and teaching cooperation. This workshop provides an overview of the topics to be discussed in greater detail throughout the series. Specifically, participants will be introduced to basic ABA principles and learn how they are used to:

  • Identify their child’s reinforcers and keep them strong
  • Pair adults, peers, environments, items and/or activities with reinforcement
  • Teach functional communication skills to vocal and non-vocal children
  • Reduce the likelihood of problem behavior and increase cooperation
